Name & credentials:
Emilia Chumas-Skaw, MS/LMFT
Biography & Style:
My name is Emilia Chumas-Skaw. I have been a practicing marriage and family therapist for 17 years. I have successfully helped people through various tough transitions in their lives.
The following are issues I have had the opportunity to work with on a regular basis: anxiety, self-identity, depression, teen growth and adjustment, psychology of the athlete, eating disorders, grieving, and general life adjustment issues.
I also enjoy working with couples; I have had success with pre-marital counseling, re-connecting couples, and helping couples past obstacles of various kinds.
Working with families is another area I enjoy. I am married and have two children. I am well aware of challenges and stressors involved with being a part of a family. Each family structure is so different. I find it extremely rewarding when I help reconnect a family unit.
In recent years, I have found that incorporating positive psychology into my practice has made a great difference in the outcome of therapy. Helping clients become aware of their personal strengths, practice optimism, and practice gratitude gives them the tools they need to make decisions that lead them to achieve their goals.
Mindfulness is another area, which has been a recent addition to my practice. Unless one concentrates, focuses, and practices mindfulness, s/he goes through daily routines without thinking about what is happening and what decisions need to be made for the best outcome.
Don’t hesitate to give me a call. I am happy to talk with you so you can determine whether or not I would be a good fit for therapy.
