Guild Certified Feldenkrais Practitioner(CM) since 1997
At the very beginning of Susan’s physical therapy career, she studied the uses of biofeedback and would often attach electrodes to a client’s musculature. They would get visual and/or auditory cues from a machine as to the amount of activity in that muscle as they attempted to either relax it for pain relief or better activate it for strengthening purposes. How else could you change anything if you had no information about it? So the use of a biofeedback machine made sense to her, but despite the client’s clinical successes, functionally there was poor carry over. Then she was introduced to the Feldenkrais (rhymes with “rice”) Method® of somatic education and an intense 4 year training. This opened a door to providing useful feedback and producing fundamental change by helping clients re-connect with their natural ability to move, using an exploratory process of learning we see in children. True neuromuscular (sensory-motor) re-education, integrating mind and body and giving a person the means to take charge of their own well-being and not be left dependent on a practitioner or a biofeedback machine.
Scientists call this process “neuroplasticity”, the brain’s extraordinary ability to self-organize towards more effective and intelligent action if given the right environment. The Feldenkrais Method creates that environment and it has been referred to as “an owner’s manual for the human body” because it shows you HOW to learn from your own body.
Using gentle movement lessons, the method teaches a person how to move with minimum effort and maximum efficiency, not through muscular effort, but through increased awareness of how your body works. Moving with less effort makes daily life easier. The anthropologist, Margaret Mead said, “This is the most sophisticated and effective method I have seen for the prevention and reversal of deterioration of function.”
Regardless of age or fitness level, it’s for anyone seeking improved quality of life. The Feldenkrais Method can assist you to overcome limitations brought on by stress, misuse, injury or illness. Athletes and artists can benefit from performance enhancement or simply anybody desiring greater ease with activities of daily living. Other benefits noted have been increased mental clarity, concentration and creativity.
There are two learning styles:
- Awareness Through Movement® (ATM) lessons are a verbally guided sequence of gentle movements with directed attention taught to groups or studied alone from recordings, text or memory. They can take place lying and sitting on the floor or in a chair, or standing.
- Functional Integration® (FI) lessons are taught to individuals, hands on with a practitioner designed to meet your personal needs. They usually begin sitting or lying on a low, padded table with the student fully clothed. The teacher guides you communicating through a gentle, listening touch and movement, in addition to words.
As a seasoned physical therapist, Susan is proficient in other manual skills, such as craniosacral therapy and myofascial release, but whatever the approach utilized, her intent is to provide feedback of your body’s natural and perpetual movement that promotes health and optimal function.
